The Old Pier, Carsethorn

From Carsethorn to America...

As early as 1794, Scots and Irish people took the one-way journey from their homelands to America and Canada from Carsethorn. The village began as a fishing and coastal trading port, the sandy shore making it safe to beach ships and float them off on the tide. Only a few gaunt timbers remain of the pier by the deep-water channel where the 'Countess of Nithsdale' tied up to load emigrants.

A Sign of the Times

The Steamboat Inn...

This historic Galloway Inn began trading about 1813, possibly the last place where many emigrants slept. It acquired its name some time before 1854, when steam paddleboats to Liverpool took emigrants to the ocean liners. Up till recently, there were marks of the bunks for sailors and emigrants on some of the walls. We now offer a far more up-to-date service for our visitors, some of whom are descendants of past emigrants. You can sit either in our lounges or out beside the Solway, to see the birds wheel above the Solway during their migrations. Coachloads of visitors come from as far away as Liverpool to watch the birds here and at nearby Nature Reserves.

Good Food and Good Beer...

The Steamboat is renowned for its excellent food; visitors and guests can choose their favourite bar lunch or evening meal from the extensive menus.
Meals are served in the Public Bar with its real fire, in the Lounge or in the Dining Room.
The spacious and tastefully-decorated Dining Room can accommodate 50 covers and is the ideal setting for an evening meal or social event.

A Free House, the Inn has a selection of 40 malt whiskies and a good variety of beers, including the excellent Belhaven Best. There is a range of reasonablly-priced wines, which are sold by the glass, carafe or bottle. Whether in for a pint or for a meal, to relax and chat with friends or to play pool or darts, you can be sure of friendship and a warm welcome at the Steamboat.

Directions ...

Take the A710 from Dumfries through New Abbey, turning left at Kirkbean down the road to Carsethorn. Alternatively, take the A711 from Dumfries or Dalbeattie to Beeswing and follow the minor road to New Abbey before turning right onto the A710 at New Abbey and proceeding south towards Kirkbean. Visitors coming from Dalbeattie should follow signs towards Kippford and Southerness, but stay on the A710 coast road until they reach the junction at Kirkbean.
See Map for details. Or - like David Bogie, the Scots Rally Driver - you could try arriving by helicopter...
